National Night Out is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs.
  • Strengthen Neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships.
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and positive police-community partnerships. The benefits your community will derive from National Night Out will extend well beyond the night.
To register your community for this year’s event or for celebration event ideas contact the National Association of Town Watch at 1-800-648-3688.

After you register your community, the National Association of Town Watch will send you a National Night Out Kit. Each kit contains information for planning your event, sample press releases, clip art and promotional products you can order.

The Minnesota Crime Prevention Association sponsors a sub–committee to help promote National Night Out across the state.

The 2007 NNO Committee started the year by hosting the 2006 NNO Awards Luncheon on March 1, 2007.  The Awards Luncheon followed the precipitation theme of National Night Out 2006, but in the form of snow. At the luncheon, 29 communities were recognized as National Award Winners including the State of Minnesota.  In addition, the Target Corporation was recognized for all of its contributions to National Night Out. The 2008 luncheon is planned for February 28, 2008.

At the MCPA State conference, NNO surveys were distributed to get feedback as to what date is best for communities in celebrating National Night Out in 2009. In addition, surveys were also sent via the MCPA e-mail list for feedback. Why the survey? A letter received from Matt Peskin from the National Association of Town Watch, stating that National Night Out 2009 would be taking place on September 15th.  This has since changed and is back to the first Tuesday in August.  Many communities responded to the surveys. There will be much more coming out in 2008.

A Big THANK YOU to the Target Corporation.  They participated with many of the communities and were a wonderful asset and organization to link with.  Target offered communities a variety of Target and National Night Out merchandise.  Thanks to Dorie Jessen from the Hutchinson Target store for all of her work.   We look forward to 2008 working with the Target Corporation.

As for Goals for 2008, the State of Minnesota will continue to:

  • Recognize 2007 Award Winners
  • Connect with additional and new communities within the State of Minnesota
  • Connect with more Community businesses
  • Provide NNO & Neighborhood Crime Watch information throughout the year
  • Host a state-wide roundtable (s) and NNO Post Project 101
  • Determine and implement a Project 365
